The series stars Alex Kompothecras, Brandon Gomes, Chloe Trautman, Garrett Miller, Juliette Porter, Kelsey Owens, and Madisson Hausburg. The show courted controversy after star, Alex Kompothecras, was linked to four men with a history of animal abuse. Kompothecras was a close friend of the group of men who attained viral status after dragging a shark to death behind a boat. The men had also used dead dogs as shark bait. Kompothecras's friends had previous criminal records for drugs and animal cruelty[4]. Kompothecras came under fire for a video showing him shooting a hammerhead shark with a gun.[5] He was not charged for animal cruelty. In response to the scandal, MTV's premier party for Siesta Key was cancelled due to public outrage over the shark abuse video. The cast also received death threats.[6] In response to the controversy, reality star, Lala Kent of Vanderpump Rules, posted several Instagram posts targeting Kompothecras, including a racist post that he had uploaded to Instagram.[7]

On October 2, 2017, MTV ordered eight more episodes bringing the first season to a total of 18 episodes. The episodes premiered on January 15, 2018.[8]
